Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Top of the evening to you! Who else is over this gloomy weather?

For the remainder of the day, chances of precipitation will remain widespread in our region of the state. As of now, the National Weather Service has our county under a Flash Flood Watch until the early morning hours of tomorrow, with additional accumulation of a quarter of an inch of rainfall is possible. Our main concern will be with flooding in vulnerable areas such as streams, creeks, and rivers, from excessive runoff. If you plan to be out and about at any point for the rest of the night, avoid roadways that are near low-lying areas. Plan ahead to give yourself some extra time for travel so you can stay alert and take it slow.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Why No Snow?

This evening many of you might have noticed that there was some sleet that fell in the Bowling Green area around 8:00pm, even though the temperature was 32 degrees. So why was this not snow? the answer is easy. High up in the atmosphere it started off as snow but this snow fell through a shallow area of warm air which melted the snow back into rain. As the rain approached the surface, and entered cooler below freezing air, the rain refreezes into ice or sleet which is what we saw this evening. So for those of you wondering why it was not snow, there is a warm layer of above freezing air currently situated over Bowling Green which melted the snow thousands of feet above our heads but then the cold air refroze that rain into ice/sleet. The good news is that the surface is to0 warm, thanks to our recent warm days, for any sleet to stick or accumulate at the surface. Have a Nice evening and a good day tomorrow!

Numerous Showers Pose Threat for Flash Flooding

Good afternoon to you! How was your weekend? We hope wonderful!

As of now, the National Weather Service has our county within a Flood Watch until the end of the day, with an additional one to two inches of rainfall possible in portions of our region of the state. Recently, the Storm Prediction Center has removed our county from the marginal risk for severe weather. However, the Weather Prediction Center has advanced our risk for excessive rainfall from slight to moderate. Our main threat will be numerous flash floods events with significant events possible. Many streams may flood, potentially affecting larger rivers. Thus, if you are out and about, be sure to take it slow on the roadways.

Moreover, that fresh breeze will stick around for the remainder of the day, with gusts reaching up to 30 miles per hour. In the late afternoon, temperatures will continue to warm to the 70 degree mark, then cool back off to the mid-30’s by nightfall. We aren’t expecting for these to reach below freezing, but that may occur Thursday night. Stay tuned for more on that in Thursday’s post.

That’s all for today! Have a great day!

Mason’s Monday Outlook 2/21

Good morning, folks, and happy Monday!

Today’s Forecast

Pleasant weather can be expected for your Monday, as temperatures will be mild. For today, temperatures will top out in the mid 60s with partly sunny skies, and a bit breezy with wind gusts up to 25 mph possible. Later this evening into tonight, expect rain chances to increase as the threat of flooding becomes a concern. Low temperatures in the upper 50s. The National Weather Service in Louisville has issued a flood watch for the entire region as 1-3″ of rain, and potentially more, is in the forecast through Tuesday night. This is a concern due to the flooding rains we saw just last Thursday. Also with this rain, the threat that thunderstorms may turn severe remains another item to watch. Always remember to turn around, don’t drown, and to stay up to date on local weather and traffic conditions if out and about.

What to Watch For

After this first rain-making system moves out of our area Tuesday night, we have a small dry period on Wednesday before the next rain chances Wednesday night, Thursday, and Thursday night. With two large rain systems this week, flooding remains a huge concern. Stay tuned for the latest on the developing threat.

A Sunny Weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! After a washout Thursday we are in for a nice weekend ahead! This weekend will be overall sunny with high around 40 degrees on Saturday. Sunday, we can expect highs around 60 degrees with slight breeze out of the south. Sunday looks like a great day to get and do some out door chores. I plan on washing my car on Sunday because its long overdo for a good wash.

Also in this day in history is a day that I look back upon in sorrow. This day in 2001 was the day Dale Earnhardt Sr. passed away. He was amazing guy who change the world of racing. I was too little to remember him but seeing those who were his fans on this day, it truly shows how amazing he was.

Enjoy the nice weekend and have a great President’s Day!

Today in Weather History

Good morning to you! How has your week been so far? We hope wonderful!

On this day, in 1972, the state of Minnesota fell victim to a blizzard, to which is a combination of high winds and snowfall. Winds of 30 to 50 miles per hour swept the state, with peak gusts up to 90 miles per hour, and surfaces were buried in two to six inches of snow accumulations. These conditions led to times of absolute zero visibility, posing a threat to travel. As a result, standstill traffic and school cancellations plagued the state. In comparison to south-central Kentucky, our last blizzard took place in 1994!

Have a great weekend!

Storms on the way

Hello, hope everyone is having a good day.

It looks like tomorrow is going to start off as a nice day in the morning, but as we head into the afternoon things are going to start to go down hill with a cold front that will impact the area tomorrow evening. This will trigger the development of some thunderstorms, some of these thunderstorms could be severe. The primary threat associated with any of these storms is a damaging wind threat. There is a tornado risk for areas south of the Kentucky Tennessee border but the ingredients for tornadoes in Bowling Green will be significantly less, but a a brief spin up or two is possible given strong levels of Shear.

My Forecast for Thursday (2/17)

Tomorrow highs will climb into the mid to upper 60’s skies will remain mostly cloudy throughout the day with the chance of rain and storms increasing in the late afternoon. a few of these storms may be severe with a primary threat of damaging winds, but and isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. the best timing of these storms is anywhere between 5pm and 8pm. Now would be a good time to review those severe weather action plans and prepare incase severe weather occurs.

Stay safe out there and have a great day!

Today in Weather History

Good afternoon to you, local or non-local of the south-central portion of the state!

On this day, in 1990, a low pressure system propagated eastward across the nation, with heavy snow set on the path of the High Plains. Of them, South Dakota saw the highest accumulations of snowfall. From Pierre to Huron, the central region of the state, a band of 10 to 12 inches of snow fell, whereas areas around this band saw 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. To put this into perspective with our area, we tend to only see around 3 inches of snowfall for the entire month of February!

Have a great day!
