A Storm Start to the Week

Sunday: High – 88, Low – 66

A few showers will move through the area this morning, so make sure to pack that umbrella if your heading out to church. It is going to be a sweat box outside as dew points are already in the mid 60’s.

The Low Pressure system to our west will move northeastward over the next day and the accompanying cold front will inch closer to the region. The severe storms will stay to our west for today, but an isolated shower can’t be ruled out.

Sunshine Returns

Today

A high pressure center just off to our north and west will keep the chilly northwesterly winds blowing but the skies rather clear. With the sunshine out, the low 60’s don’t feel too bad. At least compared to this time two months ago when we were 50 degrees cooler with snow on the ground.

Tomorrow will once again be mostly sunny thanks to the high pressure in the region. Winds will remain out of the west/north west keeping us from warming out of the low 60’s. Here are the temperatures from the NAM for tomorrow night.

Cool and Wet Week Ahead

Monday

The week won’t be as wet as last week but we will see scattered showers every day but Tuesday and Thursday. Today will top out in the mid to upper 60’s with scattered showers lasting until early evening. A few peaks of sun are possible, but don’t expect more than a few minutes here and there.

Why all the nasty weather? As a Low pressure center over Michigan continues to move east, the associated cold front will push through our area, providing lift for the scattered showers. The cold front will be well past the area by tonight, clearing things out. But gusty conditions will move in behind the front.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be one of the better days this week with sunny skies and highs in upper 60’s. Unfortunately, it will be quite windy with gusts as high as 25 mph. Rain and storms will move back into the region late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. Nothing is expected to be severe. The NAM 4 km simulated reflectivity shows isolated showers and storms beginning to push into the region between 7 pm and 9 pm.

There is no real flooding concerns this week except under a heavier shower. The WPC shows the potential for around an additional half inch of rain to fall through Friday.

Prepare for potentially severe storms tonight

Bowling Green is currently 78 degrees with a south southwest wind at 13 mph. Storms are on the horizon for Bowling Green, as well as the majority of the Midwest today. Current radar shows that pop-up storms are starting to develop off to the west along and ahead of the cold front. Instability in western Kentucky is also providing enough lift for storms to generate.

radar

The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of Kentucky in a slight risk and parts of Western Kentucky in an enhanced risk of severe weather. This means an increased probability of severe storms in this area of the state. Potential impacts include damaging winds, hail, heavy rain, lightning, and isolated tornadoes.

The storms are predicted to enter the region overnight, between 10pm and 2am. The HRRR Simulated Reflectivity shows a squall line in western Kentucky around midnight. Since these storms will be arriving in the middle of the night, be sure to have weather radios and devices programmed to alert in case of an emergency.

After the cold front passes, high pressure will move into the area providing a beautiful forecast for the weekend. High temperatures will be in the upper 60s and 70s this weekend with plenty of sunshine. No rain is expected for the weekend period. Prepare yourself for upcoming severe weather and enjoy your weekend!
