Wild Weather Wednesday

Hello everyone! I wanted to take a quick moment to introduce myself. My name is Harmony Guercio and I’m a sophomore here at WKU studying to become a Meteorologist. I’ve wanted to be a Meteorologist as long as I can remember and, according to my parents, I’ve wanted to be a Meteorologist ever since I could talk. Fun Fact: Today, the day of my first weather blog, is my 20th birthday! I will be bringing your weekly Wednesday weather report and some recent wild weather events because I find those to be the most interesting. I really hope that you enjoy reading my blogs.

Today’s Forecast

Good morning, and happy Wednesday! I hope everyone is having a great week so far, and staying warm! This morning will start off mild and windy with showers tapering off by the afternoon. Highs start out in the 50s, but by tonight it will be cooling off into the lower 40s and upper 30s. A wind advisory is in effect until this evening with winds of up to 15-25 mph and gusts of 35-45 mph expected. These winds could blow around unsecured objects, along with knocking out tree limbs and/or causing power outages. Temperatures will continue to drop coming into Thursday with snow showers and flurries on and off throughout the day. No major accumulation is expected.

Recent Wild Weather

This past week there have been a few wild weather moments. One that stood out to me was the famous cloud shaped like a UFO that was spotted last Friday (January 20th) over Turkey. Some may ask, how can a cloud even look like this? Lenticular clouds are most commonly formed in crests and valleys of mountainous terrain. Due to the topography of the mountains, you get different waves in the atmosphere. As air rises and winds blow over the hills and mountains, clouds form and layers are created that are shaped like lens or saucers giving the illusion of something wild, just like this past cloud that has gone viral.

Wild Weather this Day in History

On this day in history, 47 years ago, an icy rain hit Buffalo NY, causing a coating of ice on the runways at the Buffalo Airport. This coating of ice caused a shutdown of flight operations for 2 hours. A little further northeast, this same icy rain affected the Monroe County airport in Rochester. A single engine aircraft’s windshield formed ice and caused them to miss the runway by 50 ft.

Stay warm, and continue to have a nice rest of the week!

Friday Forecast 12/2

Good morning, folks, and happy Friday!

Today’s Forecast

For today, you can expect some milder weather for our area. High temperatures will be in the lower 60s with mostly cloudy skies, and a slight rain potential. Overnight lows in the upper 40s. Certainly warmer than it could be for this time of year!

What to Watch For

Tomorrow you expect more mild conditions, with temperatures once again right around 60 degrees. Rain chances clear out, however, and skies will be mostly sunny. Saturday night the cold settles back as lows dip into the upper 20s, setting up for a cooler Sunday with highs in the mid 40s. A rain free weekend brings the potential for for rain every day next week, so enjoy the clear skies this weekend!

Weather Fact!

This November in Bowling Green, we saw a maximum high temperature on November 4th of 78.5 degrees, and a minimum temperature of 14.7 degrees on November 21st. This gives a spread of 63.8 degrees between the two. The last time we saw a spread large was in November of 2016, when the maximum temperature of 85.3 degrees and the minimum temperature of 19 degrees produced a 66.3 degree spread. (Kentucky Mesonet)

Have a great weekend everyone 🙂

Last Monday of November!

It’s that time of the year! With Thanksgiving officially over, we start decorating and listening to Christmas music! With a little less than four weeks until Christmas, we might just start seeing the snow pop up in the forecast.

What can we expect this week?

We can expect a cloudy and warm Tuesday with gusts up to 30mph. Showers move in during the afternoon with severe thunderstorms overnight. The main severe threat is gusty winds with a chance of a tornado, especially southwest of Bowling Green. After the front moves through, expect colder temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday will only be a high of 42 degrees and a low of a chilly 22 degrees. Friday looks to be warmer with a high around 55.

When can we expect snow again?

There is no chance of snow in the current forecast, but here is to hoping for a white Christmas!

Friday Forecast 11/18

Good morning, folks, and happy Friday!

Today’s Forecast

The dive into winter cold continues, and you are definitely going to need to bundle up when heading out today. High temperatures today will be in the upper 30s with a few peeks of sunshine. For tonight, the area experiences a real chill as temperatures drop into the upper teens with partly cloudy skies. Stay warm today!

What to Watch For

The weekend will remain cold as high temperatures Saturday will be in the low 40s, and even cooler Sunday with highs in the mid 30s. Both nights the area will experience lows in the upper teens as well. The good news, however, is that there will be sunny skies and calm conditions throughout your weekend. If you can brave the cold, go enjoy your weekend! We begin to warm things up next week with highs climbing back into the 50s.

Weather Fact!

If you think that it is starting to feel like winter around here, you should take a look at Buffalo, New York! The area is currently enduring a historic lake-effect snow event, threatening the area with potential for 2-4 FEET of snow. According to The Weather Channel, the greatest 1-day snowfall total in Buffalo is 33.9″, back on December 10th, 1995. Having a 1-day snowfall total above 20.5″ would place it in the top five. That is crazy amounts of snow to think about!

Have a great weekend everyone 🙂

We can expect the cold to persist through the whole week with highs not reaching past 50. There will be rain passing through late tonight into Tuesday morning but no winter precipitation. Once the front passes through expect a very cold Thursday and Friday. Expect sunny skies for most of the week.

When is the next chance of snow?

There is no chance of snow in the forecast for the next five days.

Friday Forecast 11/11

Good morning, folks, and happy Friday!

Today’s Forecast

We’ve got quite a mess in store for our Friday. After waking up to the sounds of heavier rain overnight, conditions will begin to dry out a bit for your Friday. Expect highs to top out in the upper 60s, and peaks of sun after nearly an inch of rain falls. Tonight, temperatures will drop as much colder air works into our area for the weekend. Lows will be in the mid-to-lower 30s, as more rain overnight could end in a few wet snowflakes Saturday morning.

What to Watch For

The chance for the first flakes of the season in our area does exist for Saturday morning. Depending on how close those temperatures get to freezing, and how fast they drop, will determine how much snow is observed. The ground is warm and it will have rained before, but decent snow rates could put down a light coating on grassy and elevated areas. Above all else, our first taste of winter! The bigger story will be the significantly colder temperatures. Highs on Saturday will struggle to hit 40, and overnight lows will be in the mid 20s. Sunday looks clearer and a bit warmer during the day with mid 40s, but the clear skies at night allow us to potentially reach our coldest temperatures of the new winter season, with lows in the mid-to-lower 20s.

Weather Fact!

With the threat of snow tonight, it is important to remember that snow does not exclusively fall with surface temperatures at or below freezing. Layers of the atmosphere have different temperature profiles, and when the air is at or below freezing close enough to the surface, the snowflake may not have enough time to melt if surface temperatures are above freezing. Additionally, snowfall rates can cancel out melting rates, and high snowfall rates with surface temperatures above freezing can result in temporary accumulations.

Bring on the snow!! Have a great weekend everyone 🙂

Friday Forecast 11/4

Good morning, folks, and happy Friday!

Today’s Forecast

For today, you can expect a rather warm and sunny day, as high temperatures will top out in the low 80s. For tonight, clouds will build in as temperatures stay mild in the low 60s. Make some Friday plans as this may be one of the last warm Fridays we have!

What to Watch For

On Saturday, temperatures will just make it into the lower 70s as showers and thunderstorms build throughout the day. Additionally, winds will be high as the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the day on Saturday. Expect sustained winds between 15-25mph and gusts up around 40mph. Conditions will dry up Saturday night into Sunday, as temperatures recover into the mid 70s with mostly sunny skies and decreased wind.

Weather Fact!

On this date in 1959, there was a rare tornado in Alaska. According to the National Weather Service, “A small F0 tornado caused minor damage near Cape St. Elias Light Station on Kayak Island”. That’s something that doesn’t happen very often!

Have a great weekend everyone 🙂
